The Problem With AC Additives And Sealants

When your air conditioner starts leaking, it’s tempting to reach for a “quick fix” can of AC sealant or additive. After all, the label claims it’ll stop leaks instantly and save you from expensive repairs, right? Unfortunately, that “easy fix” can actually lead to bigger, costlier problems down the road.

Let’s break down why these sealants and additives often do more harm than good and why it’s better to call a professional like Service Wizard Heating and Air Conditioning instead.

Why AC Sealants Are a Bad Idea

Sealants are designed to harden when they come into contact with air or moisture, supposedly sealing up small leaks inside your AC system. But here’s the problem: air conditioning systems are filled with delicate components and tiny passages that the sealant can clog up.

Once it hardens in the wrong spot, it can block refrigerant flow through parts like the expansion valve, condenser, or evaporator. Even worse, this sticky mess can cause your compressor to seize up, turning a small leak repair into a full system replacement.

The Hidden Dangers Of Additives And Contamination

Professional technicians use high-end refrigerant recovery and recycling machines to properly service AC systems. But if your system has sealant inside, it can clog these machines instantly. That means your technician’s tools could get damaged, and many shops will either refuse to work on your system or charge extra for cleanup.

And it’s not just about the tools; these additives can also contaminate your refrigerant and oil mixture, leading to poor lubrication and increased wear on expensive components.

The result? Shorter system life and more frequent breakdowns.

    Short-Term Fix, Long-Term Damage

Sealants may stop a small leak temporarily, but they rarely solve the real problem. Larger leaks caused by worn-out O-rings, cracked hoses, or corroded lines will only get worse.

What’s more, moisture inside the system can react chemically with the AC sealant, forming a jelly-like substance that wreaks havoc on the entire AC unit.

In the end, what looked like a cheap, simple solution often leads to higher repair bills and a system that’s beyond saving.

The Smart Way To Fix AC Leaks

Instead of gambling with additives, have your system professionally diagnosed and repaired. Technicians at Service Wizard Heating and Air Conditioning use safe, proven methods like UV dye or electronic leak detectors to find the exact source of a leak.

From there, they perform proper repairs that restore your cooling system’s performance and reliability without risking major damage.
